It’s been an extraordinary six weeks at Sydney Theatre Company working as Assistant Director to Sarah Goodes on The Hanging. This new Australian play, by Angela Betzien operates on a number of levels – in some ways it is a contemporary homage to Picnic At Hanging Rock, entertaining concerns with our national obsession of ‘the missing child’ narrative. It is also an interrogation into the vulnerable and psychological landscape of a young girl on the threshold of womanhood.
Working on a new Australian play has been a remarkable process as an Assistant Director because the work demands a heightened dramaturgical response and it is a thrilling ride to witness it’s development. It is a privilege to actively witness and support the evolving script and performances – as works of art in motion.
Congratulations to the whole team including Sarah Goodes (director), Angela Betzien (playwright), Elizabeth Gadsby (designer), Steve Francis (composer), Dave Bergman (projection), Tanya Leach (stage manager), Jennifer Parsonage (deputy stage manager), Kate Chapman (production manager), Charmiane Gradwell (vocal and text coach).
And our wonderful cast of three – Ashleigh Cummings, Genevieve Lemmon and Luke Carroll.
